Kayak In A Tropical/Sectacular setting – Florida Kayaking
One of this country’s best kept paddling secrets is nestled down in Florida’s southwestern tip in Everglades National Park. It is called the 10,000 Island Wilderness. This tropical location is one of the greatest US destinations for paddling! Located near the southwestern tip of the state one can enjoy a wide variety of local and exotic animals such as Alligators and tropical birds. This area also holds many rare tropical trees not found anywhere else in the US like Rainbow Eucalyptus and Plumeria. After a little sight seeing its time to get out for some exciting everglades kayaking.
Most of the “islands” of the Ten Thousand Islands aren’t real islands at all, just clumps of mosquito-infested red mangrove growing out of the shallow Gulf of Mexico. Though most are not considered islands, just mangroves growing up out of the water, some are very nice. So even though the name suggest thousands of islands, there are really only a few hundred or so, most being unusable.
This is not a kayaking trip for those who lack navigation skills. This is an area filled with channels, bays and creeks that can easily get you lost and confused. Get a waterproof NOAA marine chart before leaving out on this Everglades kayaking trip. You will need a good chart that is waterproof. The regular paper charts tend to fall apart when they get wet. For this kind of trip a compass and knowledge of how to use it is a must Plus, I would highly recommend taking a (waterproof) GPS receiver. Naturally, you should know how to use all these navigational tools.
Chokoloskee Island is a great place to go for a day or weekend if you enjoy fishing, relaxing and everglades kayaking. When you want to enjoy some relaxation time on the island you can kick back and sink your pole into the water to catch a wide variety of fish. The island is big on relaxation and fishing, since they are blessed with redfish, tarpon, sea trout, snook, and many other types of fish. There are a plethora of paddling trails and multi-day canoe and kayak trips that can be explored and enjoyed in this area.
Make sure to have sunscreen on hand at all times since the sun can be extremely dangerous and lead to burns. You will also need to bring along hats, long sleeved shirts, pants, and other protective clothing for wear out in this sub-tropical environment as well. This is a salt-water environment. No fresh water is available at your destination, so you’ll have to take it with you-at least 1 gallon of freshwater per person per day. Freshwater is not native to this area of Florida and everyone wants it…including the raccoons!
Now, about the bugs. Mosquitoes and sand flies are bad here, except in winter. You will need netting that blocks both of these pests and adequate amounts of insect repellent sprays, candles, and other products. Our trip in late May was comfortable but I think we were lucky as the bugs were not in full force just yet.
If you’re brave enough to get out in the wild and smart enough to bring everything needed for a safe trip, you will fall in love with this area of the Everglades. The Ten Thousands Islands is an exciting place to visit if you have those navigational skills and come prepared for the physical exertion of Everglades kayaking. Get in shape and get ready to enjoy the wilds of Florida!
