Causes of YLOD and RLOD

It’s also speculated that older Playstations are more predisposed to Yellow Light of Death because they have older less efficient processors that produce more heat than the later PS3 models.
Many instances of purported YLOD faults , have been fixed by taking apart the PS3 console and applying a heat gun to warm up the central processing unit/GPU and direct chipsets.
However, in a limited number of cases , YLOD could be displayed because of a defective power supply, preventing the console from properly booting up.
To substantiate the cause of YLOD , close down the console and allow it to cool down for twenty minutes. Then power up the console and listen intently for the fan. If the fan powers on temporarily and then switches off again, the error is most likely with the motherboard. If you do not hear the fan on powering up , then it is likely to be a power supply issue .
The RLOD can also be brought about by overheating, but at the same time it may be due to a serious hard drive crash. Depending on how frequently you use your PS3 and how well you’ve taken care of it, a hard drive should endure for a good three years.
Of the two , YLOD is the more significant as it infers there’s component fault needing a professional repair. A flashing red status light on the other hand is commonly a precursor to mounting problems. So if you are experiencing a red flashing light, all isn’t lost. Actually, even if you are getting a yellow blinking light, you may nevertheless be able to recover your PS3 system if you catch it early enough.
