Do You Have Swelling Of The Liver?
Swollen liver is a term people occasionally use for the same problem doctors call enlarged liver or hepatomegaly. The words swollen liver and enlarged liver are self-explanatory. So the question becomes, why does a liver become swollen, and how dangerous can it be? The intent of this article is to answer those questions, along with a number of others.
One of the things you need to know is that swollen liver is not a disease itself. It is a symptom of some other liver-related problem or condition.
When a liver condition first appears, there are ordinarily no symptoms. This is true of an enlarged liver too. But as the but as the disease behind the swelling gets worse, symptoms are likely to show up.
In general, the typical human liver weighs between three and four pounds or 1.5 kg. It is similar to a wedge in shape, and is approximately the size of a small American football. It can be found on the right side of the body about halfway down the torso.
Swollen liver often results from one or a combination of causes. Hepatitis is often one of the underlying problems. Hepatitis is usually caused by a virus, but can also be caused by excessive use of alcohol. The other most common cause, cirrhosis, is usually the result of excessive use of alcohol.
Cancer and liver infections are also prominent causes Liver infections often accompany diseases such as malaria and mononucleosis.
Fatty liver disease is another condition that triggers an enlarged liver. Fatty liver disease, also known as fatty liver syndrome, is the result of excessive fat accumulation on the liver
The first thing your physician will want to do in treating swollen liver is to diagnose the cause of the problem. If an enlarged liver has resulted from cancer or an infection, it’s critical to treat these disorders right away.
If hepatitis or cirrhosis resulting from drinking is the cause, all use of alcohol must be stopped immediately. If swelling in the liver is not connected to alcohol abuse or a liver-related disease, your doctor is likely to suggest that that you make some lifestyle changes. Diet and exercise are helpful in both treating and preventing swelling in the liver.
If you believe you are at risk for swelling in the liver, here are some recommendations for preventing it.
If you drink alcohol habitually, either slow down or stop all together. If you don’t stop completely, never to take drugs at the same time. Doing so may cause irreversible damage to the liver.
Be careful that you only take medcine or supplements that are approved by your doctor, and never exceed the recommended doses. Also talk to your doctor before trying herbal supplements you have not taken before. Certain supplements are capable of damaging the liver. You should also be careful with vitamins because a number of vitamin combinations can be harmful to your liver.
Be particularly careful around household cleaners, insect killers and other chemicals. If you work with these substances, take care that you are in a place with good ventilation. Some everyday household cleaners and chemicals could be particularly risky for the liver.
