Pregnancy’s Hormone Fluctuations Can Lead to Hair Loss After Childbirth
A lot more changes go on in your body during pregnancy than you might imagine. Most pregnancy books discuss common symptoms that women experience during pregnancy like backaches and mood swings. But, possible hair loss after pregnancy is rarely discussed. You’ll be hard pressed to find many people who understand the natural hair cycle of hair when women aren’t pregnant. This can make it very hard to understand the changes that occur after childbirth.
Your scalp has thousands of hair follicles embedded in it. Throughout the course of your lifetime, each one of these hair follicles will cycle through three different growing stages about 20 times. Here is a look at these cycles:
1.Anagen – this is the growing phase of a hair. About 80-90% of your follicles are in this phase at any given time. Hair grows continuously during this 3-7 year period at the rate of about a half inch a month.
2.Catagen – During the catagen phase which lasts between two and four weeks, hair will become detached from the blood supply causing the follicle to shrink in size. Whenever new hair starts forming, the bulb of the old hair will be pushed upward. At any given time, about 2-3% of your hair is in this stage.
3.Telogen – This period lasts about three months. During this time, about 50-100 strands of hair will fall out each day. The hair follicles will weaken and become thinner. A new follicles grows in its place whenever a follicle falls out.
Hair loss can happen every day as you have just learned. You should know that women who are pregnant will experience these cycles differently. The catagen phase is where most hairs stay during pregnancy. The only reason they don’t fall out is because of the hormone increase in your body. Your hair will progress to the next stage and begin to fall out after your pregnancy is over and your hormone levels return to normal. Your normal cycles will return after three to four months.
You shouldn’t stress yourself if your hair falls out after pregnancy since it’s perfectly normal. After your pregnancy is over, your hair will return to its normal processes. You can chill now. You aren’t going bald!. Doc No. hlsoehasl-sldhgt
