What Should An Organisation Verify Before Allowing An Employee To Work At Home?
An organisation can make large savings if a good segment of the staff can actually work from home. In these tricky trading conditions any intimation of a reduction in spending can be pounced on and started out on almost straight away but the plan requires careful deliberation and setting up. Each employee’s circumstances will differ from the other members from within the company and so each case has to be analysed on it’s own merits.
Initially the issue that should be asked is whether the duties themselves will work from a home office. Look at the job specification, tools necessary to carry out the role and what kind of communication is necessary with other members of your business. Archetypal unskilled home working jobs are ones where the individual may conduct online surveys for money but if your requirement if at the other end of the difficulty range you will need to think hard. If all that looks fine you can then look individually at all those staff members who carry out that role.
In these circumstances you need to consider their conduct so far, has there been problems of trust or behaviour worries in the past, are they reliable, do they have a good record. Set down some criteria that you review them against, if you discover you are unable to allow them to transfer to home working you will then have the data that backs you up.
Then thrash out with the worker the practicalities of working from home. Do they have a detatched room or segment of their house where they can get away from the rest of the family and be undisturbed? Who is at home during working hours, and are they liable to cause distractions?
Finally consider the employees approach to working from home, could they become too isolated? Are they likely to become too disconnected. Once all these considerations have been gone through you should have a good idea if the plan will be successful, of course circumstances can alter but at least you will have done your best.
