Dry Needling vs. Acupuncture – What Is The Difference
Dry needling is a process of inserting a very thin and solid needle like the ones used in acupuncture into a person’s muscle without using any substance or drugs such as analgesic, anesthesia and other solutions in order to relieve muscle pains. To get a therapeutic effect, there must be some muscle jerking response upon administration of dry needling. A Czech Physician named Karel Lewit introduced this kind of treatment in 1979 and over the years, it has been improved and this is now what we call dry needling which is being practiced by chiropractics and physiotherapists.
Dry needling is most effective when one experiences muscle tension due to neck strain, lower back pain, headache and postural changes. This is also effective for those suffering tennis elbow, calf injuries and other athlete-related injuries and could ease out arthritic-like pain.
Before a patient undergoes dry needling, it is important that he will be completely assessed by an expert in order to verify if this method is good for him. The physiotherapist will determine the patient’s posture, strength and length of the muscles as baseline data. Location of trigger points are also examined, which is done solely by palpation. After the examination, the physiotherapist will discuss with the patient if he or she really needs dry needling.
Dry needling has been a subject of controversy and debate among physiotherapists and acupuncturists wherein some acupuncturists premised that it is the same as acupuncture, only being branded under a different name. But actually their only similarity is the using of needle as their most important instrument. Acupuncture belongs to the old traditions and beliefs before the coming of the new technology while dry needling is already established in the modern times. Besides, acupuncture works both internal and musculoskeletal problems while dry needling is only for the relief of muscle pains.
Acupuncture is practically painless when administered by an expert, while dry needling results in muscle twitching and may even result to extreme pain and soreness after the session. Acupuncture also uses several needles inserted at the same time to different body areas, while dry needling makes use of different needles depending on the patient’s condition and are inserted to a myofascial trigger point.
