The Effects Of Bad Sleep On Acne

Does the amount you sleep influence your acne? If you experience acne, you might have noticed this yourself. After a period of sleep deprivation you may wake up with oily skin and blemishes. This is because sleep does indeed affect acne. Lets see how sleep affects your Acne And what could be done with sleep to help reduce the issue.

As humans we require sleep. Each of us need a different level of sleep every night, the whole “8 hours a night” is just an average. Many people do just fine on 6 hours while others need more sleep. Sometimes we don’t really have much choice on how much we can sleep due to obligations however we should always try our best to get plenty of sleep.

The quality of your sleep also matters. You could have a poor sleep for eight hours and technically not get enough sleep.

A lack of good sleep may:

- Result in stress and even lead to unhappiness.
- Increase insulin resistance
- Increase inflammatory cytokines
- Increase the probability that you gain weight.
- Leave you with low energy levels and concentration during the day.

These are just a handful of examples of the issues a bad sleep may lead to. The two main concerns for acne are the inflammation and increases in insulin resistance.

Even with slight sleep deprivation, we could experience an increase in insulin resistance. This means that your bodies ability to use glucose is reduced. This may lead to acne as well as other health issues such as diabetes.

Again with only a slight amount of sleep deprivation, we can experience an increase in inflammation. This can affect several health disorders as well as acne.

Anyone who has dealt with sleep deprivation can tell you that it does increase our stress levels and can sometimes lead to depression and stress, which also has an effect on acne and oily skin.

You generally know if you’re not getting enough sleep but a good sign is the way you feel when you get up. People rarely feel great as soon as they are up but do you feel like the walking dead? Do you have a hard time getting through the day? This could be caused by sleep deprivation. It could also be caused by other issues such as diet, but you should not be feeling this way and you should try and figure out what is causing your low levels of energy.

To improve your sleep, the first thing you should do is acknowledge the fact that you are not getting enough quality sleep. Then you should try a few things out.

These could be:

  • Stop working long before you go to bed so that your mind is not in overdrive when your head hits the pillow.
  • Going to bed an hour early every night – This may be difficult in the beginning as your body clock needs to adjust but it shouldn’t take long to get used to it.
  • Lowering your caffeine consumption through the day.

The most important thing you need to do is acknowledge the issue. If you’re sleep deprived then you need to try to solve the problem. If you feel like you’re suffering from insomnia and require help or advice from an expert then you should speak to your doctor.
